About Mary C Ray
Mary C. Ray provides talk therapy with attention to mind, body, social and spiritual arenas. Her goal is to facilitate positive change in her patient's lives. She is a holistic practitioner, considering physical, emotional, social, spiritual and intellectual aspects of life as legs of a table. If the quality of life slips off too often, then perhaps one or more of the legs needs adjustment. Often the adjustment needed is a more mindful, flexible approach, a set of practices for moving through acute as well as cumulative life stress and for using the tensions of daily life to potentiate growth.
Mary is certified nationally and in the state of Virginia as clinical social worker. As a psychotherapist over the years she has worked with battered women, abused children, substance abusers and their families, directed programs for intensive outpatient treatment as well as inpatient, lead groups, provided speaking engagements on numerous topics and consulted on a multi-state level. Currently, Mrs. Ray works with the worried well- helping to turn survivors into thrivers. Mrs. Ray's hopes through her work to facilitate communication, problem solving, achievement of balance, improve performance and create greater opportunity for understanding and peaceful resolution of issues on a micro and macro level. Mary provides individual, couple, and family psychotherapy as well as working in business settings. She leads workshops and classes on relaxation, creativity, improving relationships, stress reduction, yoga, Pilates and general wellness.
Mary received her bachelor's degree in Sociology and certificate in social work from St. Mary's Notre Dame. She received her MSW from Indiana University with a specialty in Systems and their impact on those within them. Mary had an externship in family systems at family institute of Virginia with Joan Winter and Harry Aponte. Mrs. Ray's other credentials are: EMDR certification, Imago Relationship Therapy Advanced Clinician, ACE group fitness instructor, Reiki Master Level II, Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner- She has also taken courses in PAIRSS, Gottman and PETC's techniques for working with couples, Gorski relapse prevention model and its application to positive change.
Mrs. Ray lives in her 200+year old home with her partner of 25+ years and pet. Mary has taught tap, jazz, ballet, martial arts, lifesaving, swimming, small craft safety, group fitness, yoga, Pilates and indoor cycling. She sings plays guitar, enjoys spending time with her family sailing, bicycling, paddle boarding, hiking and restoring their home.
