About Andrea Mary Quast-Mortello
I am a LCSW, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and an SEP, a Somatic Experience Practitioner. For the last 20 years I have studied several therapeutic healing modalities, I have integrated that work into my own unique approach. As a therapist, teacher, healer and spiritual guide I use these skills to meet clients where they are and to offer the best possible interventions to move them along on their path of healing, resiliency and self-discovery.
I practice Somatic Experiencing in my sessions with individuals and couples. In my experience I have found it helpful to have the lens of SE to understand and support my clients more fully. What has helped people in my practice tremendously is to begin to experience through their bodies that the sensations they feel affect the thoughts that they think. Those thoughts in turn send messages feeding the sensations. By introducing SE it can begin to release old patterns bringing more balance and coherence to the nervous system. Ultimately this can allow a person to respond more freely giving their bodies and minds permission to choose something different. As the intensity of sensations diminish and the meaning of sensations are shifted a whole new relationship to one self and others can be created. New possibilities, new options, new pathways are possible.
In couples work when clients begin to make a connection between the sensations they are experiencing and how these sensations can affect their relational lives a new way of being in relationship can emerge. It’s important to understanding why we may retreat or attack or why we might run from every challenge. It’s also another key to learning to listen to ones self and to intuit what one may need. Knowing when one is triggered and what that feels like and compassionately attuning to ones self during that time can ultimately lead to less arguing, more connection and a deeper understanding of one self.
Understanding and working with your sensations when you feel activated can lead to a greater understanding of your particular communication style. It opens a window to exploring, understanding and creating new possibilities that are different from typical outcomes. As the therapist I focus on seeing these new potentials, moving through trauma, understanding family of origin patterns and identifying belief systems. I teach clients and students that the body can become an ally, and when the body and mind become increasingly coherent, stable and flexible then the possibility for growing, creating and changing increases.
I have studied with many teachers including, Caroline Myss, Khandro Rinpoche, Rick Jarrow, Eleanora Amendalora (Shamanism) Byron Katie, Dr Joe Dispenza, Terry Real, Pia Mellody, Peter Levine and many others from the SE staff. I also us SE Touch and sound healing in my practice.
