About Laura van Riper
Laura’s warm, friendly, results-oriented style makes clients of all ages feel comfortable, whether they’re children, teenagers or adults.
Laura earned her Masters Degree from Columbia University in Advanced Clinical Social Work, and received her B.A. in Psychology from Boston College. She has worked with seniors in an assisted living facility, with clients in public housing and with children and families at The Child Guidance Center of Southern CT. As the founding Director of Parent Awareness of the YWCA of Darien-Norwalk, Laura worked with school administrators, parents and volunteers to help families raise resilient children.
Laura has extensive post-graduate training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and the treatment of anxiety. Because the roots of psychological symptoms are often due to past traumas, Laura has extensively studied trauma treatment for children and adults, including Somatic Experiencing®, a treatment for resolving trauma symptoms and relieving chronic stress. The SE approach releases traumatic shock, which is key to transforming PTSD and the wounds of emotional and early developmental attachment trauma.
Laura has also studied with the Center for Mind-Body Medicine, where she learned the science and skills of meditation, guided imagery, biofeedback, and self-expression in words, drawings, and movement.
Working in a variety of Corporate Human Resources positions, Laura counseled, coached and trained executives. She blends the efficient style she used in business with effective clinical techniques to help her clients get results.
Laura is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, and is a volunteer instructor for parents of at-risk children in Stamford, CT.
Laura is the proud parent of two young adults, two loving dogs and enjoys being outside.
