About Paula Josa-Jones

Paula is a Somatic Experiencing®  practitioner (SEP), a Certified Laban Movement Analyst (CMA) and a Registered Somatic Movement Educator and Therapist (RSMET) accredited by the ISMETA, the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association. She is also a Guild-Certified TTEAM (Tellington Touch Equine Awareness Method) practitioner.  Paula has taught in the dance programs at Tufts University, Boston University and at universities, colleges and dance festivals nationally and internationally. Her writings on movement and dance have been published in Contact Quarterly and Page Arts Journal.  Her book, Our Horses, Ourselves: Discovering the Common Body, will be published in September 2017 by Trafalgar Square Books.

Paula's work includes the discipline of Authentic Movement, a meditative, intuitive, improvisational movement practice involving a mover and a witness. It involves listening, attunement, and slowing and opening to a deeper sensing of body and psyche. It was developed by dancer and psychotherapist Mary Starks Whitehouse, who, following her work with Carl Jung, became curious about moving without intention, or the practice of "waiting to be moved." With eyes closed, maintaining a focus on bodily sensation and the flow of consciousness, the mover attunes to the inner landscape of the body and allows herself to be moved by whatever impulses arise in the moment. Over time, the mover - in the presence of the compassionate witness - discovers the awareness and containment of their own inner witness.

"My intention is to help others discover a deep, sensuous experience of the body by nourishing qualities of improvisation, play and curiosity in all aspects of our lives. My work with clients includes equine experiential learning practices that help us feel and understand ourselves with greater clarity. This happens when we experience the balancing awareness that horses uniquely offer, because they so clearly sense and reflect our inner emotional states."
