About Shelly Huffman

I've always been interested in peoples' stories and how they became who they are. My story has been shaped by life-altering events, death, sorrow, and many "dark nights of the soul". What I've found to be true for myself and for my clients is that, our bodies and minds develop ways to survive these challenges. We are hard-wired for survival. Once we grow up and have more control over our lives, these survival mechanisms become less necessary, and yet, we hold onto them, because we don't know how else to be. We want to ease up on our defenses, to allow the love of a partner to reach us,  to allow the unpredictability of parenting to be fun and not frantic. We want our lives to take on a new shape and direction--one that is more "us". We want to experience the freedom to be fully who we are and to love others just as they are. Psychotherapy and other healing arts can be the beginning of an intentional life-altering journey--one that YOU choose. I would be honored to assist you on this journey. I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Supervisor in the state of Washington, specializing in individual, couples and family counseling.

My areas of interest and specialization include relationship counseling and helping individuals and couples with issues of mistrust, betrayal, and sexual intimacy issues. I also work with clients struggling with depression & anxiety, major life transitions, illness, chronic pain, death and other losses, issues of abuse and trauma, including PTSD: developmental and shock traumas. I'm LGBT-friendly and help facilitate the coming out process for clients. My areas of ongoing study are in the neuroscience of psychotherapy: how therapy changes the brain. I have specialized training in mindfulness-based  therapies.
