About Lela C. Carney, LAc, SEP
My practice combines acupuncture, Chinese and functional medicine (natural, herbal and nutritional) with mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and Somatic Experiencing (SE) trauma support, Dynamic Attachment Repair experience (DARe), NeuroAffective Relational Model NARM), I was licensed in 1983 and have been practicing in Santa Cruz since 1986. . . . . . .One of the most important things I've learned is that many of us with autoimmune issues, hypothyroid and adrenal exhaustion have had long-term stress and we've been dealing with a tendency to quickly go into hyper-vigilance, fight, flight or freeze. Really listening to such illnesses and symptoms can teach us so much.
. . . . . . For this reason, I've committed to learning to work with trauma, especially the more ongoing, subtle early developmental types that are often missed by health care providers and which underlie many chronic disease/dis-ease states. For syndromal clients, I offer the embodied mindfulness of MBSR and SE , the work of Dr. Robert Scaer and Lawrence LeShan (Cancer as a Turning Point), the Touch Training approach of Kathy Kain and attachment repair work (Diane Poole Heller’s DARe ). Working in conjunction with a local therapist, I find the EFT. Hold Me Tight, relational attachment work of Sue Johnson to be most useful when relationship conflict triggers “Liver Qi stagnation/Fire rising” or “Heart/Spirit disturbance”.
. . . . . . Additional understanding of trauma treatment with acupuncture and Chinese medicine has come through study with Joe C. Chang, Integrative Care for Acute Combat-induced PTSD at the Ft. Bliss Restoration & Resilience Center. Meditation, plus mindful movement and breath exercises like trauma-sensitive yoga, mudra, self-acupressure, tai chi (tai qi) and qi gong are very helpful for working with the stress aspect of any chronic disease, especially those of the endocrine system and immune systems. These natural, holistic treatment approaches can be alternative or complimentary to Western medicine, depending on the condition and the person's preference and needs. I work with physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors, therapists and Somatic Experiencing practitioners to create a team that will provide maximum support for unraveling knotted health challenges and reweaving the tapestry of life in body, mind and spirit. Somatic Experiencing greatly enhances the way I practice medicine and my understanding of energetics enhances the way I practice SE.
. . . . . . My clients have told me that “acupuncture relieves, SE empowers”. It’s a powerful combination. Increasingly, I find people love just doing SE even more than acupuncture.
